Lim Hwee Seng

George Town · Charting the Present

"I had unit trust holdings in four different management companies and I honestly could not tell you what any of them were doing. After the four sessions I had a clear one-page document I could actually read and understand. That sounds like a small thing but it was not."

Noraini Razak

Butterworth · Pre-Retirement Pathway

"My husband and I both attended. The private sessions were genuinely useful — each month the mentor had reviewed what we discussed the month before and came prepared with something specific. It did not feel like we were starting from scratch every time. The written summary at the end is something I keep returning to."

Penang Hill · Considered Investing

"Nine weeks is a commitment. I will say that up front. But by week four I was asking questions I did not know how to ask before — about how unit trust management fees compound over time, and what that actually means at my age. I came in thinking I understood investing. I was wrong."

Salmiah Abdul Wahid

Kepala Batas · Charting the Present

"I was worried it would be a selling exercise. It was not. The facilitator mentioned specific products exactly once — as a teaching example — and was quite clear it was not a recommendation. That matters to me. I have been to seminars that felt different."

Bayan Lepas · Considered Investing

"The sessions on how to read a fund's fact sheet were worth the entire programme fee on their own. I had been buying unit trusts for six years and never looked at the expense ratio. Once I understood what I was looking for, I found I had been holding two funds that were essentially identical and both expensive."

Chan Wei Lin

Georgetown · Pre-Retirement Pathway

"I found the section on EPF Account 1 versus Account 2 withdrawal rules particularly useful — things that should be common knowledge but somehow are not. My only comment is that five months passes faster than you expect, and I would have wanted one more session on estate planning basics."

Three Detailed Accounts

Account 1 — Charting the Present

A civil servant with four insurance policies and no clear picture

The Starting Point

Zainab, 47, had four separate insurance policies taken out at different times, a fixed deposit, two unit trust accounts, and EPF savings she had never reviewed in detail. She described her financial position as "a drawer full of things I don't know how to read."

What the Programme Did

Over four sessions she inventoried each asset and liability, calculated her actual net worth for the first time, and assessed her insurance coverage against her realistic healthcare exposure. The facilitator helped her identify that two policies were duplicating coverage for the same risk.

Where She Ended

She left with a single-page financial map that she described as "the clearest view I have ever had of where I actually am." She subsequently enrolled in Considered Investing Foundations the following intake.

"I spent fifteen years being confused about my own finances. After four Saturday mornings in George Town, that was no longer true."

— Zainab, 47, Penang

Account 2 — Considered Investing Foundations

A pharmacist who had avoided investing because he did not trust what he did not understand

The Starting Point

Rajendran, 44, had accumulated savings in fixed deposits for a decade — not because he thought it was optimal, but because he had no confidence in his ability to evaluate other options. He had been approached by unit trust agents several times and declined each time.

What the Programme Did

The nine-week programme gave him the framework to evaluate what he was being offered rather than simply accept or reject it. By week seven he had learned to calculate the real cost of a unit trust over a ten-year period and compare it to the alternatives meaningfully.

Where He Ended

He did not leave with a list of things to buy. He left with the tools to make his own decisions. He described the shift as moving from avoidance to informed caution — "not the same thing at all."

"I finally understand what I am looking at when I read a fund prospectus. That is worth more to me than any specific recommendation."

— Rajendran, 44, Penang

Account 3 — Pre-Retirement Pathway Programme

A couple twelve years from retirement with very different financial situations

The Starting Point

Hamid and Suraya, both 53, enrolled together. He had a government pension and modest EPF savings. She was self-employed with significant EPF contributions and no other structured savings. Their retirement planning needs were different in almost every dimension.

What the Programme Did

Private sessions were conducted jointly and allowed the mentor to address both situations in parallel. The midway review flagged that Suraya's EPF Account 2 had significant room for voluntary top-up that neither had considered. Healthcare gap analysis identified a material coverage shortfall in their existing policies.

Where They Ended

They received a written retirement plan summary addressing both their situations. Hamid described the process as "the conversation we probably should have had ten years ago, but better late than not at all."

"We came in as two separate financial situations. We left with a shared plan we both understood."

— Hamid & Suraya, 53, Penang
